- Dear Mac User Group,
-
- My name is Rick Smolan and I am the photographer who created the best selling
- "Day in the Life" book series ("A Day in the Life of America" etc..). These
- are the best selling photography books in US history and over 3 million copies
- have been sold to date. Five of the "Day in the Life" books have been featured
- on the covers of Time and Newsweek.
-
- This past fall I published an unusual book called "From Alice to Ocean: Alone
- Across the Outback" which, like the "Day in the Life" books, is a big
- beautifully photographed coffee table book.
-
- What makes the book of special interest to the Mac community is that it comes
- with not one but TWO interactive CD's. The CD's are being described by the
- press as "Grandma and Me" for adults and they allow the viewer to imagine
- themselves joining an extraordinary 27 year old woman on her seven month 1700
- mile solitary journey through Australia's wilderness outback accompanied by
- only 4 camels and her dog.
-
- The Wall Street Journal said "Until now most books aimed at adults have fallen
- flat on the screen, in my view "From Alice to Ocean" is the first success."
- Publishers weekly called ALICE, "A spectacular look at the future of
- publishing". MacTV will be featuring "FROM ALICE TO OCEAN" on Wednesday January
- 6th and Tuesday 26th.
-
- Through a special arrangement with Apple (Apple is bundling one of the CD's
- with each new Peforma CD) my publisher is offering this $50 book to Mac User
- groups for $35 plus $5.95 postage and handling.
-
- I am attaching a brief description of the book and an order form. Please feel
- free to contact me if you have any questions.
-
- All the best
-
- Rick Smolan

- ===========================================================================
-
- "From Alice to Ocean: Alone Across the Outback" (Addison-Wesley, pub date
- December 1st) is the astounding story of twenty-seven-year old Australian Robyn
- Davidson, who set off to cross the desolate Australian outback on foot,
- accompanied only by four camels and a dog. Following in the footsteps of
- historic female adventurers like Amelia Earhart, Karen Blixen and Beryl
- Markham, it was a trip that began as a pure and (many said) lunatic gesture of
- independence, and quickly turned into an all-out battle of wits against the
- forces of both nature and civilization.
-
- Robyn Davidson's own account of the journey, "Tracks", became a worldwide
- bestseller, translated into eleven languages with hundreds of thousands of
- books sold. It is at once the probing journal of a daring and stubborn woman,
- and an exhilarating wilderness adventure story.
-
- Rick Smolan, the photojournalist who created the "Day in the Life"
- series, had his own adventure tracking Robyn down to document her trip for
- National Geographic Magazine. His new book "From Alice to Ocean" is an
- extraordinary photojournalistic look at Robyn Davidson's epic 1700-mile
- solitary journey. Smolan combines his own award-winning photographs of her
- expedition, most of which have never been published before, with Robyn's text.
- What emerges is a suspenseful, courageous narrative much in the spirit of "West
- with the Night" and "Out of Africa", where one woman bravely pits herself
- against endless obstacles and odds.
-
- "From Alice to Ocean" is also noteworthy as the first illustrated book ever
- packaged with its own interactive CD discs. The discs, one produced by Apple
- Computer and the other by Eastman Kodak, represent what many people are calling
- the most successful example of interactive media combined with traditional book
- publishing to date. The CD's provide the reader with a whole new way of
- experiencing an illustrated book, allowing them to imagine themselves on
- Robyn's epic journey and actively participate in her story.
-
- "From Alice to Ocean" was made possible through the generous support of the
- Eastman Kodak Company, Apple Computer, Inc., Federal Express and the Regent of
- Sydney.

-
- About the New Interactive Technology in From Alice to Ocean
-
- The two interactive CD discs tucked inside of From Alice to Ocean represent
- what many people are calling the most successful example of futuristic
- interactive media combined with traditional book publishing to date. This new
- computer technology has the potential to change the way that illustrated books
- are published, and ultimately may reshape the publishing industry itself.
-
- "In bundling two CD discs inside every copy of "From Alice to Ocean"--a real
- first for book publishing--I wanted to show people how an illustrated book
- might be published in the future, and demonstrate the astounding potential of
- this technology," commented From Alice to Ocean author Rick Smolan. "I believe
- that, within five years, the interactive CD will be as common as audio CD's are
- today."
-
- The first disc inside of "From Alice to Ocean" is a Kodak Photo CD, which takes
- advantage of Kodak's revolutionary new PhotoCD technology. It is a technology
- that is already having a major impact on the photographic industry. "What's
- fascinating," commented Smolan, "is that Kodak's technology will soon allow
- anyone to 'publish and narrate' their own illustrated stories, using a PhotoCD,
- at a very low cost."
-
- Like the photographs you will see on this sample disc, it will soon be possible
- to store your family photographs on a PhotoCD and view them on your television
- set, using a special PhotoCD player. You will also be able to have prints made
- directly from your own PhotoCD, replacing the need to store negatives.
-
- The Kodak PhotoCD disc is designed to be played on a Photo CD player but with
- a new plug in available from Kodak it will also play on a Mac.
-
- The other disc is an Apple interactive CD, designed to allow viewers to imagine
- themselves on Robyn's epic journey and actively participate in the "Alice to
- Ocean" story. Apple's interactive CD combines audio, hundreds of images (many
- of which are not included in the book), and Quicktime movie clips, representing
- a true integration of these different kinds of media. It also allows the viewer
- to access more detailed explanations of subjects that might interest them--the
- botany of the Australian desert, the culture and language of the Aboriginal
- people, even how Smolan took some of the pictures featured in the book.
-
- Apple's CD will work on any color Macintosh computer with a CD ROM drive.
- (Apple is releasing their first Macintosh with its own built-in CD ROM drive
- this Fall.) There are also normal audio tracks on this CD so that people who do
- not have a Macintosh computer can still listen to audio excerpts on their
- regular music CD player.
-
- Smolan is hopeful that the technology showcased in From Alice to Ocean will
- encourage others to explore the potential of interactive technology.
- "Interactive publishing is uncharted territory and I hope the other publishers
- interested in this new medium will use what we've done as a reference point and
- be inspired to experiment as well."
-
